Melissa Matutina Williams

Dr Melissa Matutina Williams (Te Rarawa, Ngāti Maru) is an independent historian, and was previously Lecturer in Māori and New Zealand History at Waipapa Taumata Rau—University of Auckland. Her book Panguru and the City: Kāinga Tahi, Kāinga Rua, An Urban Migration History (BWB, 2015) draws on the oral narratives of Te Rarawa people who joined many other Māori in mid-twentieth century migrations to Aotearoa New Zealand’s cities. Melissa’s research interests and scholarship extends to whānau and community wellbeing in the twentieth century and has been honoured by several awards. A contributor to Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History (BWB, 2014) and co-editor of Maranga! Maranga! Maranga! The Call to Māori History Essays from Te Pouhere Kōrero, 1999–2023 (BWB, 2024), she has published widely in the field of Indigenous studies, in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.
